A message from Dr. Jan Dutz, Department Head, Dermatology and Skin Science
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sunil Kalia as the Associate Head, Department of Dermatology and Skin Science.
Dr. Kalia will play a critical leadership role to help implement the Department, Faculty of Medicine and University strategic goals and missions in the areas of teaching, research and patient care. In addition, Dr. Kalia will be providing strategic leadership and direction for identifying, developing, and implementing strategies to incorporate the equity, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) objectives of the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Kalia is an Associate Professor with a Master of Health Science. He is an affiliated investigator with the Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute (VCHRI), BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) and BC Cancer Research Centre (BCCRC). He previously served as the President, Dermatology Society of BC. In 2021, he was appointed Director of UBC Dermatology Clinical Trials Unit. He continues to serve in leadership roles including Chair of the BC SunSafe Coalition, National Chair of the Sun Awareness Working Group-Canadian Dermatology Association, and the incoming President of the Photodermatology Society.
Dr. Kalia is a clinician-scientist and runs a research program within the Photomedicine Institute. His research interests include epidemiology and skin cancer. He was the recipient of the prestigious Health Professional-Investigator Award from Michael Smith Health Research for investigating novel optical methods for skin cancer detection and evaluation. Dr. Kalia is also a passionate mentor, having supervised many medical students, residents, fellows, graduate students, and faculty.
